Diabetes: Keeping Your Blood Sugar Levels Within a Certain Range

If you are diabetic, you should make sure that you keep your blood sugar level within a certain range. You can do this by controlling your diet, taking medications, and exercising.

Diet

If you have diabetes, you should eat a healthy diet. It is important for you to eat foods that will help you maintain your blood sugar level. You can use the glycemic index to determine which foods are better for you. The glycemic index is a measure of how quickly carbohydrates turn into sugar in your body. Foods with a high glycemic index include white bread, white rice, white pasta, potatoes, corn, and sugars. These foods should be eaten in small amounts, as they will raise your blood sugar levels. On the other hand, foods with a low glycemic index include whole grains, brown rice, oatmeal, fruits, vegetables, beans, and nuts. These foods will lower your blood sugar levels.

Exercise

You should also exercise to keep your blood sugar levels stable. This is because physical activity will cause your body to produce more insulin. Insulin is needed to transport glucose from the bloodstream into the cells. Physical activity will also help you burn fat and increase your metabolism.

Medications

You should take any prescribed medications as directed by your doctor. There are many different types of diabetes medications. Some of these include oral medications, insulin injections, and insulin pumps.
