Understanding Blood Pressure: Causes, Symptoms and Natural Treatments

Understanding Blood Pressure: Causes and Risk Factors

Blood pressure is the force of blood pushing against the walls of your arteries. It’s measured in millimeters of mercury (mm Hg) and is recorded as two numbers, such as 120/80 mm Hg. One number measures the systolic pressure when your heart beats, while the other measures the diastolic pressure when it rests between beats. High blood pressure or hypertension occurs when this pressure exceeds 140/90 mm Hg.

Causes of high blood pressure include obesity, smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, lack of physical activity, stress, age, family history, race, gender, salt intake, and certain medications. People with a family history of high blood pressure are at higher risk of developing it themselves. Other factors that can increase your risk for high blood pressure include being overweight, having a sedentary lifestyle, consuming too much sodium, drinking too much alcohol, and not getting enough potassium from fruits and vegetables.

Symptoms of High and Low Blood Pressure

High blood pressure usually has no symptoms until it reaches dangerously high levels. However, some people may experience headaches, dizziness, blurred vision, chest pain, shortness of breath, irregular heartbeat, fatigue, and nosebleeds. On the other hand, low blood pressure or hypotension can cause lightheadedness, dizziness, nausea, weakness, and even loss of consciousness if severe. In most cases, however, there are no noticeable signs or symptoms.

Natural Treatments for Managing Blood Pressure

There are several natural treatments you can try to manage your blood pressure without relying on medication. These include regular exercise, weight management, reducing stress through relaxation techniques like meditation or yoga, limiting caffeine and alcohol intake, eating a healthy diet rich in whole grains, fruits, vegetables, lean protein sources, and omega-3 fatty acids found in fish oil supplements or flaxseeds. Additionally, herbal remedies like garlic, hawthorn berry, and ginkgo biloba have been shown to lower blood pressure naturally.

Lifestyle Changes to Lower Your Blood Pressure

Making simple changes to your daily routine can significantly reduce your blood pressure readings. Here are some tips to help you get started:

1. Exercise regularly – Aim for at least 30 minutes of moderate intensity exercise per day, preferably every day. This could be brisk walking, cycling, swimming, dancing, etc.

2. Maintain a healthy weight – Being overweight or obese puts extra strain on your heart and raises your blood pressure. Eating a balanced diet and avoiding processed foods can help you maintain a healthy weight.

3. Reduce stress – Practice relaxation techniques like deep breathing exercises, meditation, yoga, or tai chi to reduce stress levels.

4. Limit alcohol consumption – Alcohol can raise your blood pressure temporarily, so limit yourself to one or two drinks per day maximum.

5. Quit smoking – Smoking constricts your blood vessels and raises your blood pressure. If you need help quitting, talk to your doctor about available resources.

6. Get enough sleep – Lack of sleep can disrupt hormones that regulate blood pressure, leading to elevated readings. Try to get seven to nine hours of quality sleep each night.

The Importance of Regular Check-Ups

Regular check-ups with your healthcare provider are essential for monitoring your blood pressure and overall health. Even if you feel well, it’s important to keep up with these appointments because high blood pressure often has no obvious symptoms. During your visit, your doctor will measure your blood pressure using a sphygmomanometer, which consists of an inflatable cuff, stethoscope, and gauge. They may also order additional tests depending on your medical history and current condition. By keeping track of your blood pressure readings and making necessary lifestyle changes, you can prevent serious complications down the line and improve your overall health and wellbeing.
