What Causes Bad Breath?

It’s no secret that many people have bad breath. In fact, if you’re one of those people who doesn’t like to talk about it, then you may be suffering from halitosis. Bad breath can be caused by a number of different things and can be embarrassing at times. But, with a little bit of know how and a few tips, you can easily eliminate bad breath and prevent it from occurring again.

Toothache

You may be surprised to learn that bad breath can be caused by gum disease. When your gums become infected, they start to bleed and when you bite down, you can feel the blood trickling between your teeth. This is called periodontal disease and can lead to a lot of other problems including tooth loss. You should see your dentist as soon as possible for an examination to determine whether or not you have any form of gum disease.

Bleeding Gums

If you have bleeding gums, then you should see your dentist immediately. Bleeding gums are very painful and can cause other issues such as bad breath. If you have bleeding gums, your dentist will likely recommend that you use a mouthwash to help clean your mouth and remove the bacteria that causes the bleeding.

Bad Breath

Bad breath is usually caused by bacteria in your mouth. These bacteria break down food particles and create sulfur compounds that are extremely unpleasant to smell. Your dentist can tell you if there is something wrong with your gums and he or she can also help you determine what kind of treatment is best for your bad breath.

Receding Gums

If your gums are receding, then you may need to have them pulled. There are several reasons why your gums could be receding. One reason is that you may be using too much tobacco. Another reason is that you may have diabetes. If your gums are receding because of any of these conditions, you should see your dentist. He or she will be able to tell you if you need to take some type of medication to slow the process and keep your gums healthy.

Gingivitis

Gingivitis is another condition that causes bad breath. It is characterized by swollen gums and bleeding gums. You can get gingivitis if you are not brushing your teeth properly. This can be a very serious problem and can lead to other infections in your mouth. If you are having trouble getting rid of bad breath, then you should make sure that you are brushing your teeth correctly.
